Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I check my withholding?
Once a year and after every big life event — marriage, kid, house, raise, or a move across state lines. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator plus this calculator takes 10 minutes and prevents April surprises.
Biweekly vs. semimonthly — which pays more?
Neither, annually. Biweekly = 26 smaller checks with two 3-check months. Semimonthly = 24 larger checks. Budget monthly bills on semimonthly; treat the two extra biweekly checks as bonus savings.
How do I convert $30/hr to salary?
Multiply: $30 × 40 × 52 = $62,400/yr full-time. Part-time at 32 hrs = $49,920. Our hourly-to-salary guide has the full table.
Are bonuses taxed higher?
Withheld higher (often flat 22% federal), not taxed higher. At filing time bonuses join ordinary income at your marginal rate — you get the difference back or owe it.
Why doesn’t my stub match exactly?
Usual suspects: pre-tax health premiums you forgot, 401(k) %, state disability/paid-leave premiums, city tax, or mid-year bracket creep. Compare gross-to-gross first, then each tax line.
Do I need an account?
No. No login, no database, no tracking of your numbers. Bookmark your share link instead — it encodes inputs in the URL.
Should I enter 401(k) as % or $?
Either — toggle $/% next to the field. Percent scales automatically when you test raises. The IRS elective-deferral limit was $23,500 for 2025; the 2026 figure is published each fall.
What is extra withholding (W-4 Step 4c)?
A flat extra amount withheld per year. It shrinks each paycheck without changing your real tax bill — overpay and it comes back as a refund. Handy for covering freelance or interest income.
Do you handle city taxes like NYC or Philly?
Yes — enter the rate in the local-tax field (NYC ≈ 3.1%, Philadelphia ≈ 3.7%). State tables exclude city tax, so big-city checks run slightly lower.
Why is my December paycheck bigger?
You likely passed the Social Security wage base ($184,500 for 2026), so the 6.2% tax stops until January. Set a check date in the calculator to model any exact check with YTD totals.
How much is $70,000 a year per paycheck?
$70,000 biweekly is $2,692 gross per check — about $2,234 net ($58,075/yr) for a single filer with no state tax in 2026, after ~$6,570 federal and ~$5,355 FICA.
What is $25 an hour annually?
$52,000 per year ($4,333/month). Take-home lands around $44,000/yr single in a no-tax state.
How much tax is taken out of a $1,000 paycheck?
Roughly $115 per biweekly check for a single filer ($26,000/yr): ~$38 federal + ~$77 FICA, before any state tax.
Is it better to be paid biweekly or semimonthly?
Annually identical. Biweekly = 26 smaller checks with two 3-paycheck months; semimonthly = 24 larger, predictable checks.
How can I increase take-home pay without a raise?
Fix over-withholding on your W-4, verify filing status after life changes, and trim voluntary post-tax deductions.
Do I pay Social Security tax on all my income?
Only to $184,500 in 2026. Medicare (1.45%) never stops, plus 0.9% extra over $200k single / $250k joint.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Marginal = rate on your next dollar (e.g. 22%). Effective = total tax ÷ income (often 9–15%). The calculator shows both.
How much should I contribute to my 401(k)?
A common rule is 10–15% including the match. More shrinks today’s check but cuts taxable income — toggle $/% to compare.
Why was my bonus taxed 40%?
Flat 22% federal withholding plus state and FICA stacks to ~35–40% on the stub — but the excess comes back at filing time.
What salary do I need to take home $5,000 a month?
$60,000/yr net ≈ $74,000–$81,000 gross single — low end in no-tax states, high end in California or New York.
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming — plus New Hampshire (wages already exempt). You still owe federal + FICA everywhere.
